It celebrates the arrival of spring and typically falls on April 4th, 5th, or 6th, marking the 15th day after the Spring Equinox. During Qingming, families pay respects to their ancestors by visiting their gravesites to clean them and make offerings. With origins dating back over 2500 years, the festival was designated as a public holiday in mainland China in 2008. Traditional activities include the consumption of qingtuan, green dumplings made of glutinous rice and Chinese mugwort or barley grass.
